Originally from Essex, Martina Cole now lives in Kent and has written 14 novels, most of which are based in the ganglands of east London. The Take focuses on Freddie Jackson (Tom Hardy) who has recently been released from prison and is determined to use his inside connections to make a name for himself. His young cousin Jimmy (Shaun Evans) is eager to learn the ‘trade’ and follows him wherever he goes. Soon the family begin to acquire the money and respect they longed for, but what, or who is behind their success? The story is a classic tale of power, betrayal and love.
The novel was originally released in 2005 and won the British Book Awards for ‘Crime Thriller of the Year’. The adaptation of The Take is a rarity as Martina zealously guards her work and only allows television adaptations which remain true to her novels.
Last year Martina Cole filmed part of her documentary series that explored the lives and psychologies of England’s most notorious women serial killers, entitled ‘Martina Cole’s Lady Killers”, at Fort Amherst in Chatham.
The Take begins on SKY One and SKY1 HD on the 17th June 2007 at 9pm.
