A Brush with Britain follows watercolour artist Charles Evans as he paints some of Britain’s most inspirational landscapes and cities. In this new series Charles visits two of Kent’s beautiful towns, Faversham and Margate, in search of their rich history as well as capturing their beauty on canvas.
In Faversham, Charles examines the impact of hop picking on the town and pays a visit to the UK’s oldest brewery ‘Shepherd Neame’. He also takes time to go out on ‘Greta’, a boat depicted in a painting discovered in Faversham’s Parish Church of St Mary of Charity, showing the boat rescuing stranded soldiers at Dunkirk.
Charles then continues his journey to Margate; the seaside town famous for its connections with Landscape artist J.M.W Turner. Here he visits the site of the new Turner Contemporary Gallery, due to be complete in 2011, and visits resident sculptor Anne Carrington who’s creations made from shells are sold to celebrity clients such as Elton John. The programme also explores the vibrant history of Margate’s Theatre Royal as well as the ambitious new plans for the amusement park Dreamland which was originally opened in the 1800’s.
