The Kent Fire and Rescue Service launched a film competition earlier this year called ‘Hot Shots’ and the winner has been announced as Sam Nimmo. The Kent Film Office wishes to congratulate Sam, especially as it was the first film he has ever made!
The competition was open to all 15-21 year olds living in Kent and the judges were looking for a short film with an original and creative take on fire safety, road safety, water safety or hoax calling.
Sam’s film is about arson and is a warning about how it can affect innocent people. Sam saw the competition advertised on the Kent Film Office website and said: “I was really thrilled to have been given the opportunity to enter and then to win. I found out about the competition quite late, and only got my camera a few days before the deadline, so I had to think of something that was easy to make on my own or with very little help.
He continues: “I knew I’d have to make something more artistic which would send a simple but powerful message. A very public arson attack around that time made me really think about this. I spent the most time looking for the music as I knew that would make all the difference to the strength of the message. I was fortunate to find the perfect piece without a copyright, so once I had the composer’s permission, it was fairly simple to complete the editing.
“I was mindful that the winner’s entry may be used in actual advertising, so thought all the way through of how that short piece might seem if I’d seen itduring an ad break on TV.”
Sam has won £250, with an additional £250 going to his new sixth form at Langton Boy’s Grammar so they can set up a film club.
