Magwitch is a short film, inspired by Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations and will be premiering on YouTube this Christmas Eve.
Magwitch was commissioned by the BFI and made by Viola Films to celebrate Charles Dickens bicentenary in 2012. It was conceived as a prequel to Great Expectations and tells the tale of famous convict Abel Magwitch.
The film has been screened at many film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Morelia International Film Festival and won Best Film at the Swale Film Festival.
The film was shot entirely on Kent locations such as Upnor Castle, Eastgate House, Bishopstone Beach, the Salt Marshes of the River Medway, The Guildhall in Sandwich, Plaxtol Church and the countryside of the North Downs. Some of these locations inspired Dickens and featured in his work. They have also featured in various film and TV adaptions of his novels.
The cast includes some familiar faces, such as Samuel Edward Cook (Land Girls), who takes the lead role as Magwitch, and Candis Nergaard (Stuart: A Life Backwards, The Bill). Popular actor David Verrey (Little Dorrit, Red Dwarf, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason) also stars.
Director and screen play writer Samuel Supple says “The novel Great Expectations begins in the churchyard at Cooling on a foggy Christmas Eve. So what an ideal time to release Magwitch online for everyone to see – Christmas Eve 2013!”
