Call the Midwife, the drama adapted from the top-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, returns to BBC1 with a festive special on Christmas Day. This year the setting is the Big Freeze of 1962-3, which was declared the coldest winter for 300 years bringing the East End of London to a standstill. Frozen pipes and power cuts caused by extreme weather conditions made it very difficult for our midwives to care for their patients in the local community.

Series Seven follows in the New Year, introducing West Indian Nurse, Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott), who brings new energy to Nonnatus House joining old favourites Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George). Nurse Lucille Anderson’s character gives an interesting insight into the experiences of Caribbean nurses who immigrated to Britain to help with the rapid growth of the NHS.

In June 2017, the production team filmed at their regular location, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, which stands in for Poplar in the East End of London, using the Ropery for the external snowy street scenes and the exterior of the Old Pay Office where they filmed for both Series Seven and the Christmas Special.

Set on the River Medway, The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a popular film location for period dramas offering Georgian and Victorian architecture, maritime environment, dry dock, cobbled streets, and industrial buildings. The Dockyard has previously featured in TV productions such as six-part BBC Two comedy series Quacks (2017), set during the early days of modern medical science in the 1840s, and The Halcyon (2017) for ITV, set in London in the 1940s.
