The BBC is hosting a primetime season on tackling old age and discussing some of the issues that the elderly face in today’s society.

Produced by ‘Daisy Goodwin (The Apprentice, Pulling) and Robert Thirkell (Speed, Only Human). ‘When I Get Older’ is presented by a host of familiar faces: journalist John Simpson, TV and Radio presenter Gloria Hunniford, actress Lesley Joseph, Eastenders favourite June Brown and actor/comedian/historian Tony Robinson, all of whom are of pensionable age.

‘When I Get Older’ visited Kent locals from Dartford and Westerham to discuss their life and the challenges they face. The presenters spent time with the contributors, in the hope of understanding more about what it really means to be an older person in the UK. The series addresses issues like working past the age of retirement, failing health, loneliness and what it is like to live in a care home.

Dartford is in North Kent and connects to both Europe and London with the high speed rail link at Ebbsfleet. Just down the road is Bluewater, one of Europe’s largest shopping centres. Dartford has played host to productions such as Who Do You Think You Are? (2014) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010) and Wasp (2003).

Westerham is a small village in Sevenoaks which boasts an independent brewery. It is surrounded by beautiful woodlands and can trace its roots back to the Vikings.

When I Get Older airs on Wednesday July 4 2012 at 21:00 on BBC One.
