Set during the miner’s strike of 1984, The Miner’s Son (2025) follows an amateur rock band struggling to make it big whilst being targeted by a con artist.

Directed by Juliette Short, the film’s cast includes Cal Chapman as Davey, Huw Ab Jones (TAWN-19, Surrender to It) as Clay, George Nettleton (Croc!, The Elevator) as Vim and Olly Roy as Ravvi; members of the band. Other key cast members include David Easter (Family Affairs, Hollyoaks) as Clay’s father Will, Jerry Anderson (Dan Hawk Psychic Detective (2024), Full English Breakfast) as the rogue music producer Derry Knight, and Leona Clarke (Faith, An Inspector Calls) as Davey’s sister Chrissy.

The majority of the film was shot in Deal and surrounding towns including Sandwich, Kingsdown, St Margarets at Cliffe and Dover. Filming also took place in Margate and on The East Kent Railway’s crossing in Shepherdswell.

Locations featured in Deal include various private houses, public roads, and pubs, including the now closed Cin Cin Bar on Court Street, Deal Welfare Club and The Forester. Other private locations featured include Almond House in Betteshanger, an industrial estate on Southwall Road, The Pit Stop Café, Smuggler’s Records and The Astor Theatre. Filming also took place on Deal beach, where Davey and Aisha build and eventually end their relationship.

In Sandwich, filming took place at the Delf Farm Shop, which doubles for Ravvi’s family’s shop, The Five Bells pub in Eastry, Sandwich Industrial Estate, the Stonar Café and Statenborough Manor, doubling for Stanton Manor, the impressive house supposedly owned by the con artist Derry Knight. Scenes were also filmed at St Mary’s Church in Sandwich, where Derry cons the Reverend, and on the Sandwich Bay Estate, where Davey goes for a jog along the seafront.

The closing scenes of Clay and Chrissy kissing were filmed on Kingsdown beach. Filming also took place at the now closed White Cliffs Hotel in St Margarets at Cliffe, which doubles for Derry Knight’s home. In Dover, filming took place at The Carpenters Arms pub and a private house in Sutton, the exterior of which was dressed to look like the pub where the miners meet after their picket.

Production also visited Margate, where filming took place at Olby’s Soul Bar, doubling for the skinhead venue The Babylon Club, and the Lido.

The coastal town of Deal has a long naval history and is one of the corporate limbs of the cinque ports along the south coast. The Pier is a significant local landmark and public amenity offering excellent views of the town. It is internationally recognised as an angling venue. Other productions to have filmed in Deal include Series 6 of Unforgotten (2021-2025), Pistol (2022) and Big Boys Don’t Cry (2020).

Sandwich is an extremely well preserved medieval town, situated on the River Stour, only a couple of miles from the coast. Pigman (2024), The Old Guard (2020) and The Tunnel: Sabotage (2016) also filmed in the town.

Originally built in 700 AD, St Mary’s Church in Sandwich can seat up to 300 people and has been developed into a concert and event venue.

Sandwich Bay estate is a private coastal estate, including a pebble beach, small residential area, sailing club and a couple of golf courses. The Complex: Lockdown (2020) also filmed on the estate.

Kingsdown, located just up the coast from the White Cliffs of Dover, has a secluded shingle beach, with plenty of benches suitable for picnics. Other productions to have filmed there include After Love (2021), Liar (2017-2020) and Baptiste (2019).

St Margaret’s at Cliffe sits above St Margaret’s Bay between Dover and Deal on top of the White Cliffs of Dover. It has a small village centre and to the north on Leathercoat Point is the War Memorial commemorating the Dover Patrol, as well as the Blue Bird Cafe in the old Coast Guard station. Red Sandra (2021) also filmed in the town.

Dover’s most recognisable landmarks are its White Cliffs. The Port of Dover connects the UK with the European mainland. First built in the 1180s, Dover Castle still towers above the town, signalling Dover’s strategic importance in the defence of the country. Previous productions to have filmed in Dover include Whitstable Pearl (2021-2024), Series 2 of Invasion (2023) and Rogue Agent (2022).

Margate is a seaside town complete with sandy beach, harbour, amusement park, period housing and ultra-modern art gallery Turner Contemporary. It is a very popular filming location and has recently featured in Series 3 of Big Boys (2025), Restless (2025) and Things You Should Have Done (2024-2025).

The East Kent Railway has a 2.5-mile railway line offering extensive views of the countryside, a 500-yard tunnel, level crossings, sidings and two country stations at Shepherdswell and Eythorne. They offer a variety of train interiors, from 1930s wood panelling, a 1960-1990 railway coach, to the present modern day intercity style coach, as well as a selection of small diesel locomotives. The Railway was also used for Season 2 of Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein (2024), Empire of Light (2023) and Southcliffe (2013).

The Miner’s Son (2025) was made available to stream on Amazon Prime on Saturday 29^th November 2025.
