The Hollow Crown returns to BBC Two with a second series, The Wars of the Roses that include adaptations of three more historic plays by Shakespeare – Henry VI Part 1 & 2 and Richard III. The series is part of the BBC’s Shakespeare Season commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes, The Imitation Game) stars as Richard III and Tom Sturridge (The Boat That Rocked, Far from the Madding Crowd) plays Henry VI.

The supporting cast includes a wealth of talented actors, including Judi Dench (Philomena, Skyfall), Jeremy Irons (Eragon, The Lion King), Keeley Hawes (Doctor Who, Upstairs Downstairs), Sophie Okonedo (Doctor Who, Criminal Justice), John Mackay (Doc Martin, Casualty), Stanley Townsend (Cars, Ripper Street) and Ben Daniels (Locke, Madaline).

The first series aired in 2012 and featured Richard II, Henry IV, Part I and 2 and Henry V. The latter of which was also partly filmed in Kent; at Penshurst Place and Squerryes Court.

The second series of The Hollow Crown filmed in Kent where Leeds Castle‘s Barbican and moat to depict scenes at the Tower of London, Penshurst Place doubled as the exterior of the Palace of Westminster’s Great Gates and Dover Castle features as The Tower of London as well as Anjou’s Palace and Joan’s Chambers in Rouen in Part 1 and a French Prison and St Alban’s Chapel and Market Place in Part 2.

Rich in history, Leeds Castle is set in 500 acres of beautiful parkland and formal gardens. The castle has opened its doors to a number of film productions over the years including Gadget Man (2014), Henry VIII (2003) and Lady Jane (1987).

Dover Castle is one of the most iconic of all the English fortresses, guarding the gateway to the realm for nine centuries. With its beautiful medieval interior, secret wartime tunnels and set overlooking the English Channel, Dover Castle is a popular film location having previously welcomed productions such as Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Into the Woods (2015) and To Kill a King (2003).

Penshurst Place is a 14th Century Manor House with preserved interiors, including the unique medieval Baron’s Hall as well as 11 acres of Elizabethan walled gardens. Wolf Hall (2015), Merlin (2008) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) have previously filmed at Penshurst Place.

The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses also features in the Kent Film Office Tudor(ish) Trail which celebrates Kent’s Tudor history and film connections.

This brand new eight part ITV noir thriller centres around Marcella (Anna Friel), who finds herself heartbroken when her husband leaves her unexpectedly and isolated from her children. After deciding to return to the Metropolitan Police following a 10 year break, she instantly becomes involved with a serial killer case she worked on in 2005. Marcella finds herself looking for answers to both her work and personal life, but will she find what she is seeking?

The series is written by internationally renowned screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt (Rederiet, The Bridge) and directed by Charles Martin (Skins, The Returned) and Andrew Woodhead (Fortitude, Law & Order: UK).

The Port of Dover is the UK’s busiest passenger port, with the town also boasting Dover Castle and the infamous White Cliffs of Dover. The Dover area has previously featured on screen in The Tunnel: Sabotage (2016), Wolf Hall (2015) and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (2011).

Secret Britain (2016)

Secret Britain is a BBC series which explores the hidden corners of the UK in search of the best landscapes in the country.

Now in its third series, the production visited Kent between September and October 2015 to explore some of what Kent’s glorious countryside has to offer.

Presenters Ellie Harrison, Chris Hollins and Denise Lewis filmed at a variety of Kent locations including Sheldwich, Bonnington, Little Chart, Tonbridge, Rochester, Cooling and North Kent Marshes, The White Cliffs of Dover, Fairfield and Thanet Offshore Wind Farm.

The village of Sheldwich lies south of Faversham and is on the edge of the beautiful Kent Downs. The Faversham area has been used as a film location for A Taste of Britain (2014), Southcliffe (2013) and Great Expectations (2012).

In the Ashford district of Kent is the village of Bonnington with the The Royal Military Canal running through it as well as Little Chart which is home to the Ruins of St Mary’s Church. The Ashford area  has previously been used as a film location by such The Apprentice (2015), as Emma (2009) and the infamous Kentish series, The Darling Buds of May (1991 – 1993).

The West Kent market town of Tonbridge has a rich cultural heritage and spectacular scenery with beautiful countryside, castles, stately homes, gardens, farms, as well as sports and leisure facilities. Productions that have previously filmed in the area include Great British Railway Journeys (2014) and BBC drama Missing (2010).

In the Medway district is the historic town of Rochester and village of Cooling which overlooks the gorgeous North Kent Marshes. The Medway area has previously been seen on screen in Jekyll and Hyde (2015), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2012) and Sherlock Holmes (2009).

The world famous White Cliffs of Dover offers spectacular views of the English Channel and Dover Castle. This location has previously featured in Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows (2011), On A Clear Day (2005) and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965).

St Thomas Becket in Fairfield is an isolated historic church in the middle of the Romney Marsh which dates back to 1200. The Romney Marsh area has been used as a film location for projects such as The Honourable Woman (2014), Parades End (2012) and Dr Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (1964).

The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm consists of 100 wind turbines which stretches for seven miles. The Thanet area has previously featured on screen in productions such as The Lady in the Van (2015) and Eastenders (2015).

Boomers (2014-2016) is a BBC One comedy series following the ups and downs of a group of newly retired couples living in a seaside town in England.

The six-part sitcom stars many familiar faces including Russ Abbot (Last of the Summer Wine, The Sarah Jane Adventures), Stephanie Beacham (Dynasty, The Colbys), Philip Jackson (Above the Clouds (2020), Hercule Poirot’s Christmas (1995)), James Smith (The Thick of It, The Iron Lady), Alison Steadman (Gavin & Stacey, Life Is Sweet) and Paula Wilcox (Upstart Crow, The Queen’s Nose). Both series 1 and 2 were written by Richard Pinto (The Kumars at No, 42, Citizen Khan).

After filming the pilot episode in Herne Bay in 2013, the Boomers production team once again visited Herne Bay in May 2014 to film exteriors which doubled as a fictitious Norfolk seaside town. Filming location­­s included the bandstand where they filmed an open day celebration with Morris dancers as well as Central Parade and Studd Hill.

Production returned to Herne Bay for Series 2.

Herne Bay is located on the Kent coast and boasts a delightful beach with a bandstand and seafront gardens as well as many shops and eateries, amusement arcades, and a windmill. Previous productions which have filmed in Herne Bay include Big Bad World (2013) and The Things I Haven’t Told You (2008).

Series 1 of Boomers aired on BBC One from Friday 15th August 2014.

Series 2 of Boomers aired on BBC One from Friday 25th March 2016.

The Tunnel: Sabotage (2016)

The Tunnel: Sabotage is the second series of Sky Atlantic’s critically acclaimed show, re-uniting unlikely Anglo-French detective duo Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane) and Elise Wasserman (Clémence Poésy) on another intense investigation.

While series one was a re-imagining of Scandinavian drama “The Bridge”, the new series is an original story by Ben Richards (Outcasts, Spooks) and kicks off with two seemingly isolated events: a plane crashing into the Channel, killing everyone on board and a French couple abducted from the Eurotunnel.

Elise Wasserman (Clémence Poésy), having been promoted to French Commander, is reunited with DCI Karl Roebuck (Dillane) to investigate the two cases. The cross border teams follow a shocking trail of devastation as the victims mount up and become embroiled in a terrifying, deadly game.

The gripping eight part thriller is a Sky Atlantic and Canal+ co-production, made by Kudos and Shine Films France. Joining The Tunnel’s acclaimed production team for the second series are director Mike Barker (Broadchurch, The Smoke) and producer Julian Stevens (Hustle, The Fall).

Stephen Dillane (King Arthur, Game of Thrones) and Clémence Poésy (127 Hours, In Bruges) return in the lead roles, supported by Angel Coulby (Merlin, The Jacket), and new to series two, Emilia Fox (Silent Witness, The Wrong Mans), Clarke Peters (Notting Hill, The Wire), Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation, The Newsroom) and William Ash (Waterloo Road, Shameless).

The hit first series was largely filmed in Kent and the county welcomed The Tunnel: Sabotage production team once again to their base at Discovery Park in Sandwich. Filming took place in a number of East Kent locations between April and July 2015 including:

East Kent is ideally situated with great transport links both to London and Europe. The area boasts a wealth of locations including industrial as well as historic buildings and beautiful coastal landscapes. The Ones Below is a film about Kate (Clemence Poesy) and Justin (Stephen Campbell Moore), who are expecting their first baby. They make friends with another couple who have moved into the apartment below and are also expecting a child. However, a tragic accident throws the couples into a nightmare of psychological terror.

The film is written and directed by David Farr (Hannah, Spooks) and stars Clemence Peoesy (In Bruges, The Tunnel), Stephen Campbell Moore (Burnt, Season of the Witch), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead, True Love) and Laura Birn (Purge Purge, Heart of a Lion).

The production visited Kent to film at The Port of Dover and took some close up shots of the water and Theresa (Laura Birn) as she leaves the UK., and then again when Theresa is on the boat.

The Port of Dover is the UK’s busiest passenger port and the coastline is well known for its iconic white cliffs. The area has previously featured on screen in The Tunnel (2013), Johnny English (2003) and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (2011).

The Ones Below is released in cinemas on 11th March 2016.

Churchill’s Secret (2016)

Set in 1953, ITV’s Churchill’s Secret is a feature length drama which tells the little known story of Winston Churchill’s (Michael Gambon) second time as Prime Minister when he suffered a life-threatening stroke, which is kept from the public.

Based on Jonathan Smith’s book, The Churchill Secret: KBO, the drama is told from the perspective of Churchill’s family, his doctor and young Nurse, Millie Appleyard (Romola Garai). Whilst his political peers plot his succession, family tensions surface when his long suffering wife, Clemmie (Lindsay Duncan) calls his children to visit him at his  Chartwell home in Kent, unsure if he will survive.

Michael Gambon (Harry Potter series, Gosford Park) plays Sir Winston Churchill with a supporting cast including Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, Alice in Wonderland), Romola Garai (The Hour, Emma), Matthew Macfadyen (Ripper Street, Anna Karenina), Daisy Lewis (Downton Abbey, Pusher), Rachael Stirling (Snow White and the Huntsman, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and Tara Fitzgerald (Game of Thrones, Legend).

The film is adapted by Stewart Harcourt (Treasure Island, Dracula) and directed by Charles Sturridge (Gulliver’s Travels, Lassie).

Chartwell was the real life Churchill family home from 1924 until Winston Churchill’s death in 1965 and was naturally chosen by the production to feature as the Churchill home. Exteriors of the house and garden were filmed on location at Chartwell, whilst the interiors were recreated at West London Film Studios.

Set in delightful gardens, Chartwell is a National Trust property in Westerham and the rooms remain much as they were when Churchill lived there. Chartwell has previously been used as a film location by productions such as Flog It! (2014) and The Gathering Storm (2002).

Churchill’s Secret will be shown on ITV1 on Sunday 28th February 2016 at 20:00.

Holiday of My Lifetime with Len Goodman (2016)

Strictly star Len Goodman returns to BBC One for another series of Holiday of My Lifetime. Each episode of the nostalgic show features Len and a celebrity reliving their British childhood summer holidays.

The new series will include a variety of stars including actress Pam St Clement, model and presenter Mel Sykes, journalist Jennie Bond, actress and chef Lisa Faulkner, weather presenter Carol Kirkwood and comedian and actor Jasper Carrot.

Kent will feature throughout the new series where Len Goodman visits Margate with and writer Eve Pollard and Herne Bay with presenter Lucy Alexander.

The seaside town of Margate has a delightful sandy beach, arcades, shops in Old Town and modern architecture in the form of the Turner Contemporary gallery. The town has also seen the revival of Dreamland, thought to be the UK’s first original pleasure park. Margate has previously featured on screen in productions such as Edge of Heaven (2014) and Only Fools and Horses: The Jolly Boys’ Outing (1989).

Herne Bay has a shingle beach, bandstand and seafront gardens as well as many shops and eateries, amusement arcades, and a windmill. Previous productions which have filmed in Herne Bay include Boomers (2014) and Big Bad World (2013).

Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast (2016)

Chefs Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty are back on Channel 4 with their third series of Friday Night Feast packed to the brim with show stopping recipes, serving dishes with the help of celebrities and the relaunch of their fight against food waste.

The series is based in Jamie and Jimmy’s Café in Southend and in the last episode of the series, the team visit The Quadrangle Trust in Sevenoaks for a mini food festival.

Also in the episode, actress Anna Friel learns how to cook Balinese stew, Jamie makes mega-meatball subs, and Jimmy Doherty shows how to prepare mozzarella using a few simple ingredients and a cafetiere. The duo also tries to save “ugly” fruit and vegetables from the bin and get them into the nation’s fridges.

The Quadrangle Trust is a large Victorian model farmstead built in 1870 near Shoreham. The location boasts barns, workshops, stables and a stunning vegetable garden. The Sevenoaks area has been featured in a variety of productions including Wolf Hall (2015), Rush (2013) and Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides (2011).

Great British Railway Journeys – Series 7 (2016)

Series seven of Great British Railway returns to BBC Two, as presenter Michael Portillo travels on the great train routes of Europe and retraces the journeys featured in George Bradshaw’s 1913 Continental Railway Guide.

In episode six of the new series, Portillo embarks on a new railway journey along the south coast of England which starts at the port of Dover where he is inspired by a brave Victorian sea captain to plunge into the English Channel. Next he takes the spectacular Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch miniature steam railway through the Romney Marsh to Dungeness before heading to Eastbourne.

Episode 16 sees Michael Portillo journey from Ashford to Sevenoaks starting by lending a hand at a state-of-the-art train maintenance plant which is home to the High Speed 1 trains. Next he tracks east to Marden and is moved by music played on Queen Victoria’s personal piano before ending his journey in Sevenoaks where he ends the journey at Knole Park, seat of the Sackville-West family.

Dover is home to Europe’s busiest ferry port as well as the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and Dover Castle. Productions which have previously filmed in the Dover area include Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Mr Selfridge Series 3 (2015) and Poirot – The Clocks (2009).

Romney Marsh is renowned for its unique natural beauty, diverse wild life and extensive coastline. The Romney Marshes have been used as a film location for The Honourable Woman (2014), Parade’s End (2012) and Dr Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (1964).

The desolate landscape of Dungeness is largely made up of shingle with wooden houses, power station, lighthouses and extensive gravel pits. The Dungeness area has previously been seen on screen on Homes By The Sea (2014) and Eastenders (2007).

The market town of Ashford has shops, eateries, a designer outlet shopping centre and has great links with London and Europe which are just a train ride away through Ashford International train station. Ashford and surrounding areas has been used as a film location from visiting productions including The Apprentice (2015), The Monuments Men (2014) and Emma (2009).

Sevenoaks is a town in West Kent with vibrant shopping streets, architectural treats and historic buildings including Knole Park which is nestled in a medieval deer-park and full of hidden treasures.  The area has welcomed filming from productions such as Rush (2013) and Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides (2011)

The Dover to Lewes episode of Great British Railway aired on Monday 11th January 2016 at 18.30 on BBC Two and the Ashford to Sevenoaks episode is on Monday 25th January 2016 at 18.30 on BBC Two .
