Foyle’s War is a World War Two detective drama set in the 1940sand follows Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and Sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Howell) on various criminal investigations, assisted by his driver Samantha Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks).

Episode 4 of series 3, A War of Nerves, focuses on the issue of missing supplies, leading Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle to question the owners of a local shipping yard.  However, when a bomb disposal unit descends on the yard to deal with an unexploded bomb, three officers make a surprising discovery. When an officer is murdered, Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle realises that there is more to the case than missing supplies.

This series stars regulars Michael Kitchen (Goldeneye, The World Is Not Enough), Honeysuckle Weeks (My Brother Tom, The Wicker Tree), Julien Ovenden (The Allies, The Royal) and Anthony Howell (Wives and Daughters) alongside guest appearances in A War of Nerves from Sam Oatley (War Hero, Honeymoon), Peter Capaldi (Dr Who, World War Z), Eamon Geoghegan (V for Vendetta, The Box), Corin Redgrave (The Calling, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Valerie Edmond (Made of Honour, Kavanagh QC)

The Historic Chatham Dockyard provided the perfect location for the shipyard in ‘A War of Nerves’, featuring both HMS Ocelot and HMS Cavalier. The Historic Chatham Dockyard has been used in other television productions such as Dom Hemingway (2013), Call the Midwife (2012-2013) and Oliver Twist (2007).

The third series was aired on ITV in October 2004, and all seven series are now available to buy on DVD.

Foyle’s War is a World War Two detective drama set in the 1940’s and follows Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and Sergeant Paul Milner (Anthony Howell) on various criminal investigations, assisted by his new driver, Samantha Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks).

In the first episode of the first series, ‘The German Woman’, Foyle is working on a trail of corruption regarding the conscription process and the Enemy Alien  Act. It isn’t long before Greta Beaumont (Joanna Kanska), the German wife of wealthy estate owner Henry Beaumont (Robert Hardy), is murdered with a Nazi Swastika engraved at the scene. However, Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle soon realises that traditional motives, such as money and power might be involved.

This series stars regulars Michael Kitchen (Goldeneye, The World Is Not Enough), Honeysuckle Weeks (My Brother Tom, The Wicker Tree), Julien Ovenden (The Allies, The Royal) and Anthony Howell (Wives and Daughters) as well as guest appearances in The German Women episode from James MaCavoy (Shameless,  The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day, Pride and Prejudice) and Robert Hardy (Frankenstein, Sense and Sensibility).

Squerryes Court was the perfect setting to double up as the grand home of estate owner of Henry Beaumont (Robert Hardy). Squerryes Court has previously been used for productions such as The Hollow Crown: Henry V (2012) and The Boat That Rocked (2009) and Emma (2009).

The first series was aired on ITV in October 2002, and all seven series are now available to buy on DVD.

Inspector Morse – Deceived by Flight (1989)

Deceived by Flight is episode 3, from series 3, of the well-known Inspector Morse series based on the novels by Colin Dexter where Morse is investigating the murder of a member of the old boys’ cricket team, who have reconvened before starting their European tour. However, after a second murder, it soon becomes clear that some members of the cricket club have another agenda when it comes to the tour. Detective Sergeant Lewis agrees to go undercover as a member of the team in an attempt to reveal the murderer.

As well as regulars in the franchise; John Thaw (The Sweeny, Chaplin), and Kevin Whatley (Auf Wiedersehen Pet 1983) this episode also features Amanda Hillwood (Die Hard 2),  Sharon Maughan (Holby City, Shes out of my league),  Norman Rodway (Mother Night) and Nathaniel Parker (The Bodyguard, Haunted Mansion).

Dover Priory Station and the Port of Dover both feature towards the end of the episode when the cricket team arrive in Dover, with the intention to catch a Ferry, to begin their European tour.

The Port of Dover in Kent is the UKs busiest passenger Port and the coastline is well known for its white cliffs. Dover’s Port has previously featured in Johnny English (2003), Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (2011) and more recently in Sky Atlantics drama, The Tunnel (2013).

Deceived by Flight first aired on the 18th January 1989 and is now available to buy on DVD.

Magnum, P.I. – Season 6, Episode 1 & 2 (1985)

Magnum, P.I. (1980-1988) was an American crime drama series following Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV, known as Magnum. Season 6, Episodes 1 & 2 “Déjà Vu” sees Magnum go to England to prepare Robin Masters’ new castle for a party. When St Clair, an old army buddy of his dies in suspicious circumstances, he finds himself embroiled in a murder case.

The series was written by Donald P. Bellisario (Quantum Leap, NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service), Glen A. Larson (Quincy M.E., Battlestar Galactica) and Chris Abbott (Legacy, The Bold and the Beautiful), and the “Déjà Vu” episodes star Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods, 3 Men and a Baby) as Magnum, John Hillerman (Chinatown, Blazing Saddles) as Higgins, Peter Davison (The Larkins (2021-2022), Doctor Who) as Ian MacKerras, Larry Manetti (Flying Misfits, JAG) as Orville ‘Rick’ Wright, and Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood (2020), Dune) as Penelope St. Clair.

Leeds Castle features in both episodes as Robin Master’s new English castle.

Leeds Castle is a romantic castle with medieval-themed rooms, 1920s style interiors and original marble bathrooms on a large estate with gardens, moat, woodlands, a maze with shell grotto, and an aviary. Other productions to have filmed there include Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Lady Jane (1987) and Henry VIII (2003).

Magnum, P.I. aired between 1980 and 1988. Season 6 Episodes 1 & 2 “Déjà Vu” aired on Thursday 26th September 1985 and are available to watch on iTunes.
