Secret Invasion (2023) is a new Marvel mini-series based on the comic of the same name. The series follows Nick Fury and Talos as they try to stop the Skrulls, a faction of shapeshifting aliens who have infiltrated planet Earth.

Created by Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot, Copper), who also serves as head writer, the series has an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Pulp Fiction) as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn (Darkest Hour (2018), Una (2017)) as Talos, Emilia Clarke (Dom Hemingway (2013), Game of Thrones) as G’iah, Olivia Colman (Empire of Light (2023), The Crown (2016-2022)) as Special Agent Sonya Falsworth and Cobie Smulders (Avengers Assemble, How I Met Your Mother) as Maria Hill.

In July 2022, production visited The Historic Dockyard Chatham and used a wide range of the site, including Anchor Wharf, the Ropery streets and the rear of the Officer’s Terrace which doubles for the streets of Moscow in Episodes 1 and 2 of the series.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a 17th Century Dockyard which spans over 80 acres, containing over 100 buildings dating from the Georgian and Victorian periods. It is the most popular filming location in Kent, having recently played host to Enola Holmes 2 (2022), Operation Mincemeat (2022) and Bridgerton (2020).

Secret Invasion was released on Disney+ on Wednesday 21st June 2023.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted sees the whole Muppets gang on a grand world tour that takes an unexpected turn when they become involved with an international jewel thief who is a Kermit the Frog look-a-like.

Starring alongside the Muppets gang is Ricky Gervais (The Office, The Invention of Lying) Ty Burrell (The Incredible Hulk, Dawn of the Dead), Tina Fey (30 Rock, Mean Girls), and Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill, The Monuments Men).

The Historic Dockyard in Chatham  doubled as Berlin where Kermit decides to go for a lonely walk after having an argument with Miss Piggy. Upon entering a square he is duped by the evil Kermit look-a-like, leading to Kermit’s arrest. 

The Historic Dockyard in Chatham is set over 80 acres and contains over 100 Georgian and Victorian buildings. It is a popular filming location and has been  used for productions such as Call the Midwife (2012-2014),  Sherlock Holmes  (2009) and Sherlock Holmes – Game of Shadows (2011).

Don’t miss Muppets Most Wanted which is released in cinemas on 28 March 2014.

Great Expectations (1989)

With a future as a blacksmith before him, Pip is invited to the home of the lonely spinster, Miss Havisham, abandoned on the day of her wedding. Encouraging her adopted daughter Estella to break the young boy’s heart, Pip is sent there for her own entertainment. The young boy’s fortunes change when an unknown and generous person pays for Pip to travel to London and begin a new life as a gentleman.

Starring Kim Thompson (Emmerdale Farm, 1408) as Estella, Jean Simmons (Spartacus) as the haunting Miss Havisham, Anthony Calf (New Tricks) as Pip and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, Thor) as Abel Magwitch, this Disney adaptation of the Dickens classic features many Kent locations.

Filming took place at Harty Church on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent: young Orphan Phillip (Pip) Pirrup, on a visit to the graves of his parents, meets the sinister escaped convict Abel Magwitch.  The church has part-Norman origins and is visited by both tourists and historians from around the world.

The crew also came to Upnor village to film, which provides the home of Herbert Pockets’ fiancée Clara’s house. Locals to the area will notice the Upnor Lighthouse as Pip docks in the village.

Another Kentish church, St James’ church in Cooling, which is situated on the marshes near the Hoo Peninsula, inspired Dickens so much, he used the location for the dramatic scene where Pip meets prisoner Magwitch.
