Break (2020) is directed and written by Michael Elkin (Banshee, Aux) and stars Sam Gittins (The Smoke, EastEnders), Jamie Foreman (Layer Cake, Inkheart), Adam Deacon (Babylon (2014), The Bromley Boys), Terri Dwyer (Hollyoaks, Age of Kill), David Yip (Indiana Jones, A View to a Kill), Rutger Hauer (True Blood, Batman Begins), Sophie Stevens (The Haunted, The Black Prince), Luke Mably (Combat Hospital, Exam).

Production filmed at Canterbury Prison which has previously featured in The Capture (2019) and Avengement (2019). The prison was active until March 2013 and later purchased by Canterbury Christ Church University to extend the nearby campus

Break was released on Wednesday 22nd July 2020.

The Complex: Lockdown (2020)

The Complex: Lockdown (2020) is a Sci-Fi Thriller based on a computer game of the same name and set in a locked-down London laboratory after a bio-weapon attack on the city. With time and air running out, two scientists are tasked with saving the life of a bioweapon’s terrorist.

Written by Lynn Renee Maxcy (The Handmaid’s Tale, Covert Affairs) and directed by Paul Raschid (Winterstoke House, White Chamber). It stars Michelle Mylett (Bad Blood, Letterkenny), Kate Dickie (The Witch, Game of Thrones), Al Weaver (Colette, Grantchester), and Kim Adis (The Turning, Get Even).

Production visited Discovery Park Ltd, Sandwich Bay Estate and Upton Farm whilst filming.

Discovery Park Ltd is a popular filming location, which offers a large office complex with science labs and warehouses. Discovery Park Ltd was previously featured in World War Z (2013), Baptiste (2019) and The Tunnel (2013).

Sandwich Bay Estate, is another Kent filming location used for this production. It offers a rural, step shingled beach and at low tide there are large sand flats.

Upton Farm is a Wholesale farm situated in Kent. It offers green fields and pastoral lands. Izo FitzRoy’s 2019 music video for I Want Magic was previously shot here.

The film is being released online via 101 Films on Monday 27th July 2020.

Above the Clouds (2020) is an offbeat coming-of-age comedy of one girl’s marathon quest to find her real father. When headstrong Charlie (Naomi Morris) discovers her parents have been keeping her biological father secret from her, she recruits a rough sleeper (Andrew Murton) to be her ‘responsible adult’ and sets off for Scotland on her provisional driving licence to go and find him.

Above the Clouds is a feature film directed by Kent filmmaker Leon Chambers who has directed a number of film shorts including Stolen Youth, Lonely Hearts and The Long Lonely Walk, which won five Film Festival awards. Above The Clouds was written by Simon Lord from a story by Leon Chambers, Simon Lord and James Godden.

Above the Clouds, starring Naomi Morris (Pennyworth, Back), Andrew Murton (Let Me Go), Philip Jackson (Peterloo, The Good Karma Hospital), has screened at major international festivals including Austin Film Festival 2018, Naples International Film Festival 2019 and Margate Film Festival 2019 and has won seven awards including Austin Film Festival 2018 Best Narrative Feature – Audience Award, Oxford Film Festival 2019 Best Actress Award & Best Director Award and Naples International Film Festival 2019 Indie Spirit Award. Leon Chambers and Simon Lord are currently in development with their next collaboration, sci-fi satire A Certain Tomorrow.

The film makes use of multiple filming locations in Margate including the Turner Contemporary gallery, Margate Seafront and The Harbour Arm, Marine Drive and The Parade and Thanet Way.

Margate is a seaside town complete with sandy beach, harbour, amusement park, period housing and the ultra-modern art gallery Turner Contemporary which offers exhibitions, events and various educational opportunities.

Margate seafront in the district of Thanet is a popular film location and has been used as in various productions such as in feature films King of Thieves (2018) and King Lear (2018). Ramsgate is also a popular location in Thanet and has featured in several productions such as Baptise (2019), Hurricane (2018) and The Tunnel: Sabotage (2016).

The Flood (2019)

The Flood (2019) follows the story of an asylum seeker Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) as he makes a perilous journey to England with his newfound friends Faiz (Peter Singh) and Reema (Mandip Gill). Wendy (Lena Headey), a hardened immigration officer hears his story and must decide his fate. His dangerous trip is recounted through various emotional flashbacks.

The Film Stars Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans, London Unplugged), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Danger Mouse), Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Delicious), alongside Mandip Gill (Doctors, The Good Karma Hospital) and Peter Singh (Gigglebiz, Coronation Street).

The Flood was written by Helen Kingston (Googly, The Carrier) and directed by Anthony Woodley (The Carrier, Outpost 11).

In the film, Joss Bay doubles as an Italian shoreline as Haile crosses the ocean in a boat full of other refugees and lands on the beach. The toilet block also doubles as Italian Port toilets. The Port of Ramsgate is featured as the lorry carrying Haile pulls into passport control.

Joss Bay is a Blue Flag sandy bay in Thanet. Facilities include lifeguards, cafe, parking, toilets, deckchairs, windbreaks, parasols, sun beds and a Kids Corner with bouncy castle and trampolines. It is home to the Joss Bay Surf School. Other productions to film here include Coast Vs Country (2016) and various music videos.

The Port of Ramsgate offers thirty-two acres of dedicated Port Land including three modern Ro-Ro bridges and Water and bunker facilities on all berths. Often used as a ‘stand-in’ for The Port of Dover. Previous productions to have filmed here include Britain at Low Tide – Series 3 (2019), Big Bad World (2013) and Will (2011).

The Flood is due for release on Friday 21st June 2019.

High End Yaariyaan (2019)

High End Yaariyaan is the story of three friends Karanvir (Jassie Gill), Manga (Ranjit Bawa) and Sachin (Ninja) who attend college and share a flat in London. The film documents their complex relationships and romantic pursuits.

The three friends played by  Jassie Gill (Mr & Mrs 420 Returns, Sargi), Ranjit Bawa (Khido Khundi, Bhalwan Singh) and Ninja (Channa Mereya) are accompanied by love interests Navneet Kaur Dhillon(Amavas, Ambarsariya ) as Seerat, Neet Mahal (Dulla Vaily, Hard Kaur) as Pooja and Musskan Sethi (Paisa Vasool) as Mandy.

High End Yaariyaan is directed and produced by Pankaj Batra (Sajjan Singh Rangroot, Channa Mereya). Fellow producers include Dinesh Auluck (Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo, Jatt & Juliet 2), Sandeep Bansal (Bikkar Bai Sentimental) and Manmeet Bindra (Dangar Doctor Jelly, Kaashi Amarnath).

Production used various locations in Herne Bay during filming. The Pier, Beach, Clocktower and Central Bandstand are featured throughout. Cobham Hall and grounds doubled as a London College which Karanvir, Manga and Sachin attend.

Cobham Hall is a private school set in a historic house located in 150 acres of Grade II listed parkland. Features include a stunning ball room, library, cobbled courtyards, formal gardens, water towers, modern classrooms and sports facilities, including a swimming pool.  Previous productions to film here include Wild Child (2008) and Bleak House (2005).

Herne Bay is a coastal resort in Kent which is home to the world’s first free-standing purpose-built clock tower. Nearby attractions include the Pier, beach, Reculver Country Park and Wildwood.  Big Bad World (2013) and You Are Whole (2016) have previously filmed here.

High End Yaariyaan was released in the UK on Friday 22 February 2019.

Jellyfish (2019) is a drama about a teenage carer discovering an unlikely talent for stand-up comedy. Fifteen-year-old Sarah Taylor (Liv Hill) struggles to care for twin siblings and a bed-ridden, manic depressive mother (Sinead Matthews) as well as bullying from her school peers. Jellyfish tells the story of how stand-up comedy becomes an unlikely outlet for Sarah’s frustration and quick-tempered wit.

Jellyfish is a feature film directed by James Gardner, who co-wrote the piece with film producer Simon Lord. Gardner has won six awards for Jellyfish, including three for Best Film, and is known for directing other works such as Barry Glitter and Ferris and the Fancy Pigeon, for which he won the Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for Best Post-Graduate Drama. Simon Lord has worked with Gardner on previous projects including Barry Glitter, and wrote the screenplay for the 2020 film Above The Clouds.

Jellyfish, starring Liv Hill (The Little Stranger, Three Girls), Sinead Matthews (Pride & Prejudice (2005), The Boat That Rocked) and Cyril Nri (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, This Life) premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018 and had its International premiere shortly after at Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it won the Michael Powell Award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film.

Mostly filmed in Margate, a seaside town in Thanet in Kent, production shot on the seafront, Margate train station, Dreamland and Cedar Close as Sarah’s home and the Theatre Royal. The film also features landmarks such as The Lido, Arlington House and the Main Sands as its backdrop. Margate offers amusement, culture and luxury, and is part of the district of Thanet, a popular film location. Recent productions to film in Margate include Above The Clouds (2020) and Top Boy – Series 3 (2019).

Jellyfish was released on Friday 15th February 2019 in UK cinemas and is available to watch on Amazon Prime.

Juliet, Naked (2018)

Juliet, Naked (2018), starring Ethan Hawke, Rose Byrne and Chris O’Dowd, is a warm, smart and funny adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel of the same name and features an obsessive rock fan, his long-standing girlfriend and the mysterious rocker he idolises.

Starring Rose Byrne (Bad Neighbours 1 & 2, Peter Rabbit) as Annie, Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Before Sunrise) as rock star Tucker Crowe and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Moone Boy) as Duncan.

Home Farm in Swale was previously used in André Øvredals The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2017). Filming for Juliet, Naked at the American-style Home Farm took place in 2015 where the house and grounds were used.

Filming also took place in Ramsgate, which is a popular filming area and has been used in several films and TV series such as Hard Sun (2018) and The Tunnel: Sabotage (2016). Further scenes were also filmed on Viking Bay beach in Broadstairs, which recently featured in feature films Hurricane (2018) and The Lady in The Van (2015).

Juliet, Naked is due to be released in the UK in cinemas on 2nd November 2018.

Peterloo (2018)

Oscar nominated filmmaker Mike Leigh (Mr Turner) portrays one of England’s bloodiest episodes, the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Government guards charged and attacked a peaceful protest held by 80,000 people in Manchester demanding democratic reform.

Peterloo (2018) stars Rory Kinnear (Spectre, The Imitation Game) as Henry Hunt, Maxine Peake (The Theory of Everything, The Village) as Nellie, Pearce Quigley (The Rovers) as Joshua.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a well-known film location in Kent and has been used on many projects. Production used the Tarred Yarn Store and the exterior of the Ropery to double as a Cotton Mill in Manchester.

With its Victorian and Georgian architecture, the Dockyards provides many varied locations and has also appeared in Victoria and Abdul (2017), Mr Turner (2014) and Downton Abbey (2013) among others.

St Mary’s Marshes on the Isle of Grain appears in a short scene at the beginning of the film, a lonely figure walking along the marshes. The marshes are on the Isle of Grain, between the River Thames and the River Medway. The Medway area has been used in various TV Series and films such as Black Sea (2014).

The film will be released in the UK on 2nd November 2018.

The Escape (2018)

The film The Escape follows the story of a young woman (Gemma Arterton) at a crossroads in her life, as she struggles to chase her dreams alongside her responsibilities as a mother and a wife. She decides on a change and heads off to Paris to find herself.

Director, writer, Dominic Savage, has previously worked on BBC films Born Equal and Freefall. Gemma Arterton has starred in high-profile films such as Hansel & Gretel: Witch-Hunters and Clash of the Titans. Dominic Cooper has been credited in Captain America: The First Avenger and Mamma Mia! .

Scenes were filmed in and around the Gravesend area, including Northfleet Nursery which was used as Tara’s son’s day centre. Imperial Business Park also features, as Tara’s local place for shopping.

Production also filmed in and around Dartford, at a property in Caspian Way which features as the family’s home. Crayland Primary School features as Tara’s daughter’s school and the park off of Broomfield Road is visited by the whole family at the weekend.  As well as filming at a nearby kids’ playground in Swanscombe, and Ebbsfleet International Station, where Tara (Gemma Arterton) watches the trains on one occasion and later leaves for Paris.

The Escape was released in the UK on Friday 3rd August 2018.

BBC’s Imagine (2018)

BBC’s series Imagine returns this weekend with presenter and executive producer Alan Yentob. Imagine is an arts series which was first broadcast in 2003. The latest series contains three episodes. Each episode is based on a different topic, and two episodes were filmed in Kent.

Rose Wylie: This is Blooming

This first episode of the series, produced by Lindsey Hanlon, tells the story of artist Rose Wylie, now at the prime of her profession at the age of 83. Her unlikely subjects are drawn from the world around her – from footballers and popular movies, to memories of her childhood during the London Blitz, to the stuff of everyday life. Alan Yentob meets Rose Wylie and delves into her colourful world to discover how her memories and experiences have helped shape the artist that she is today.

This episode was filmed in the home of Rose Wylie near Faversham. Faversham is a beautiful historic market town in the Swale Borough of Kent. Previous productions which filmed there include Hetty Feather Series 3 (2018) and Walks With My Dog (2017).

The Rose Wylie episode will air this Sunday 22nd July 2018 on BBC One at 10:30pm.

Tacita Dean: Looking to See

The second episode, produced by Katy Homan, focuses on the life of internationally renowned British artist Tacita Dean, who is exhibited in three of London’s leading galleries, and is celebrated for her works on analogue film. Alan Yentob joins Tacita Dean in various locations throughout the episode to discuss her poetic and thought-provoking work, and the medium which inspires her – film.

Tacita Dean grew up in the county of Kent and production visited various locations on the Romney Marsh to illustrate this, inclusing Whitehall Farm.  Romeny Marsh covers around 100 square miles from Rye to Hythe and is renowned for its unique natural beauty. It has previously been used as a film location for British Art at War: Paul Nash – The Ghosts of War (2014) and Books That Made Britain – Writers of Rye (2016)

The Tacita Dean episode will air on Sunday 29th July 2018 on BBC One at 10:30pm.
