Directed by Patrick Murray (Tales from the Thirteen Realms, The Luna Squad), the series stars Thomas Ross as Elzaz, Alex Robbins as Simon, Tamera Gandoff as Ellie Preston and Jessica Arthur as Helen.
The series was filmed in North Kent, with locations featured including Rochester, The Vines, Rochester Cathedral, Gravesend, Chatham and Fort Amherst.
Rochester is a city in Medway with the feel of a medieval market town, with cathedral, castle ruin and unspoilt high street. Other productions to have filmed in Rochester include The Crown (2016-2023), Big Boys Don’t Cry (2020) and Transhuman (2017).
The Vines is a public park situated on the site of a medieval vineyard where monks from Rochester Cathedral grew their grapes. The Vines has a unique history and was a key inspiration for Dickens in the writing of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Rochester Cathedral and precincts include many period properties from medieval times to the Victorian era. The Cathedral itself has a crypt of note and was built in 604AD by Bishop Justus, making it the second oldest bishopric in England and a Grade I listed building. The Cathedral also appears in The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1993) as well as the 2012 version.
Gravesend is a town in northwest Kent, on the south bank of the Thames. The Town’s Pier is the oldest remaining cast iron pier in the world, and the town features an unspoilt promenade, high street and two shopping centres. Gravesend also features in Bull (2021), Top Boy (2019-2022) and Black Mirror: Season 5 – Smithereens (2019).
Chatham is a historic town situated in Medway and is known for its historic dockyard, army barracks and high street. The Last Rite (2021), Living (2022) and Trapping (2023) all filmed in Chatham.
Built in the Napoleonic times to defend Medway from a land-based attack, Fort Amherst consists of period outbuildings, cannons, defensive ditches, dressed period guard quarters and atmospheric underground tunnels. Previous productions to have filmed there include The Nevers (2021), Darkest Hour (2018) and Jekyll and Hyde (2015).
Elzaz (2021-) was released on Thursday 3rd June 2021 and is now available to watch on Amazon Prime.
